The energy on this boat is incredible!
- Dancer from London
The people are what makes it. There are great dancers here, and they all dance with us!
- Dancer from New Jersey
Ive never seen such a hyped up group!
- Tom Brewster, Event Organizer
The instructors put on a great performance for the ship! We were quite surprised at the talent!"
- Cruise Talent Dancer
Of all the events I put on, this group had some of the most energy and fun that Ive seen.
- John Riddle, Event Organizer
This was the best cruise Ive ever been on. Im STILL hyped up about it!
- Dancer from Miami
This years Salsa cruise was the most fun weve all had on a cruise ship ever! People all over the world are still raving about its phenomenal success! Event coordinators Tom Brewster and John Riddle from Dancefun went the extra mile to make it fun and exciting, keeping us all busy with workshops, activities, and dancing until the wee hours of the morning. They even included a Salsa show for the whole ship, various parties, (including a very unusual pajama party), awards ceremony, group pictures, and a group-wide excursion off the ship!
Each one of us has our own story to tell; each one of us went through different experiences. Everyone had a fantastic time. In this story, Ill capture the highlights of the trip, and recount some of the most beautiful memories well all never forget.
The First Day .
We boarded on Sunday in San Pedro, California. The minute we walked on the ship I felt a strange source of energy buzzing all around me. I couldnt quite put my finger on it, but being one of the 150 Salseros that were there, I could certainly tell EVERYONE felt the same energy and was ready to let loose and party!
Dancers from as far away as Greece, London, France, and New Zealand were on board, with many more flying in from Miami, New York, Denver, San Diego, San Francisco, New Jersey, and other states across the country.
We started off with a get-together social the very first night at a lounge on the ship called the Romeo and Juliet. The Dancefun coordinators gave each one of us T-shirts and a badge to hung around our necks. This badge was our ticket to get into the workshops and socials. On it, was printed the schedule of the weeks activities, and our names.
The badges served many functions. We found we could place our IDs in these badges when we left the ship at various ports in Mexico. They also served to remind both the instructors and students where each workshop, activity, and dance social would be each day and night. This concept held us together as a group the entire trip. We all knew where to meet, and when. It was a brilliantly simple idea.
Tony, the official cruise DJ played awesome, hard-core SLAMMING Salsa every night LA Style, with minimal Merengues and LOTS of great Salsa. The instructors and dancers socialized, mingled, and fed off each others energy each evening. Everyone seemed to hit it off great from the start. Tonys music was so good, you couldnt help but want to get out there and dance!
The only haunting thing about the trip was when the ship set sail. Because it was late at night, and we were all dancing, most of us didnt even realize that we had left the port including the DJ. We slowly sailed passed the Terminal Island correctional facility, where my dear friend Jeff Camilo is currently spending the next 17 years of his life in prison.
I was looking out the window as we passed by the jail, remembering him, and how much fun we used to have dancing together. Memories of competing and going dancing till the wee hours of the morning filled my eyes with tears.
Suddenly the song El Presio by the group Fruco started playing. El Presio is a song about a man condemned to jail for 30 years. I quickly looked over at DJ Tony , and noticed he was dancing on the dance floor. I couldnt believe what he was playing, and the exact timing of that song. Of all the hundreds of songs he could have played, it had to be that particular song, at that exact moment in time. DJ Tony never knew Jeff, nor knew of his story because he doesnt have access to the Internet, nor email. Tony also came on the scene just around the time Jeff was sentenced. He had no idea.
This song was far too coincidental to be playing at this moment. Haunting chills crept down my spine as I watched the prison pass by us, with echoes of that song playing in the background. I ran and told Luis Vazquez about it. It completely freaked him out, as he was also a dear friend of Jeffs as well
The first night, John Riddle and Luis Vazquez formally introduced the instructors. Each gave a little demo and taste of the type of dancing and Cool Moves that would be taught throughout the week in the scheduled workshops.
We then went to dinner and feasted on an incredible assortment of seafood, meats, salads and deserts. Each night, I noticed most of us justifying the desert by dancing our rear ends off both before and after dinner! There was plenty of exercise, both at the on-board gym, and on the dance floor. I can personally guarantee, that you would really have to try very hard to gain weight on a Salsa cruise, thats for sure!
Going to dinner and getting to know the people around you was also one of the most pleasant experiences I personally had. We all had a choice of staying at our table, or switching to different tables to get to know our fellow cruisers. Many great relationships were formed, and lifelong friendships started. Barbie Ayure from Denver, Colorado and Roberto from Miami told me of the anticipation that had each night of getting together with their fellow dinner mates. Fascinating and hilarious stories created a family-type of bond between each one of them.
Among the many activities the cruise ship offered, the Dancefun folks provided Dance entertainment to all the Salseros. Some of the nicest highlights of the trip included beginner to advanced workshops and performances by the instructors themselves. Each day offered something exciting and new for all of us to enjoy.
The first evening was spent at sea. The boat was a bit rocky, but that didnt stop the hard core Salseros from dancing! Its quite the challenge doing turns and spins on a moving dance floor and keeping to the beat!
The second day of the cruise, we were at sea again, relaxing and exploring the ship, and getting acquainted with where everything was on this enormous boat. That night the ships crew treated us all to a black-tie event. We watched a beautiful dance performance by the ships on-board dancers. The costumes and music were fantastic. It was like watching a Broadway show, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean!
That evening, the Salsa instructors were asked to put on a performance for the entire ship. This is normally unheard of on International cruise lines, but because of the caliber of dancing, the costumes and some major string-pulling by Dancefun, the ships director OKd the big performance, and put it in the roster of events (called the Capers) the next day.
We had rehearsed the night before, taking careful instruction from Luis and Joby Vazquez from the Salsa Brava dance company. Each instructor had the opportunity to display their talents and mesmerize the crowd.
The cruise ships professional dance team came to watch our Salsa performance as well. Some of the nicest compliments came from the ships dancers and choreographers who were in the audience watching our show. There is nothing more satisfying than to hear beautiful compliments about your dance performance from another professional dancer.
After the show, all of us went dancing under the moonlight on the Lido deck upstairs by the pool. The temperature and soft warm Pacific breeze was beautiful. Luis and I took turns leading shines classes for anyone interested in joining in. We danced all night long, till the wee hours of the morning!
On Wednesday, we docked at the beautiful city of Puerta Vallarta, Mexico. Salsaweb Magazines Mexico World Correspondent, Bernie Lozano, treated us to a beautiful Countryside tour and dance exhibition. He directed the tour buses to take us to a place called Chicos Paradise, where we were shown beautiful authentic Danson and Cumbia dancing by the some of the best local dancers in Mexico. We exchanged moves and learned their style, while they experimented with our style. It was truly a magical moment communicating with each other through dance.
Those of us who didnt go on the tour spent time at a resort called The Mayan, and others rented Jet Skis and basked on the beach, soaking up the sun. That night at dinner, we were all treated to a fantastic Mariachi band on the boat.
On Thursday, we docked in Mazatlan, Mexico. Some of us went on horseback rides, while the majority of us went partying at a place called Senior Frogs. They played hard-core, slamming Salsa for us, and we danced and danced and danced. Some of the ships crew was there as well, dancing and partying with us as well!
On Friday, we spent a half-day in the beautiful city of Cabo San Lucas. The Beaches were absolutely stunning. This was by far the most beautiful of all the cities we had visited to this point. I went snorkeling and Parasailing with friends, and enjoyed shopping in the city.
Later on that night, we all got to have a barrel of laughs at the evenings Pajama Salsa party. Without going into major detail, lets just say that the pajama outfits were uh quite extraordinary. Well, maybe I shouldnt go into so much detail here, because it would just spoil the anticipation for the next event! Need I say more? Giles Eadle and Justin Mills from Oxford, England won the pajama party competition dressed in their, uh . Well, Ill leave this to your imagination, and hilarious memories for those of us that witnessed this extraordinary event!
There was also a door-decorating contest, where Salseros would dress up their cabin doors with everything from wrapping paper to items they purchased at each city they visited. Every door had a different theme. Some of them were quite uh, lets just say quite unbelievable ! Again, no detail here so as not to spoil next years cruise!!!
The next day, we were off at sea again, relaxing and telling tales of the weeks events. A few more workshops were scheduled, and dancing was again held that evening. Some of us spent time at the SPA, where you could get everything from a Manicure to a Cellulite Treatment to a Body Wrap. A cruise ships SPA is one of the best places on earth to rejuvenate and replenish a sore and ailing body.
During the trip, the instructors took beginners under their wing, and the more intermediates got to know each other, and learn each others styles. It reminded me of a mini Salsa convention, where we were teaching each other dance steps in the hallway, experimenting with different moves and tricks, and having a blast doing it!
I taught several private lessons during the tour, but one in particular that Ill never forget was when I was teaching my dear friends Giles, Sylvia and Justin from Oxford London, different LA Style Hollywood Moves. I would show them the proper way of holding a woman. They cracked up when I would tease them and say in my terrible British accent, This is the propa way to hold a gul on the donse flo . The Queens way !!
I have this terrible habit of every time Im with a person from London I start imitating their accent! I dont know why I do that!
I also taught them a move called the Bongo Butt. Its where the woman stands on her hands in front of the guy, and wraps her legs around the guys waist. He then proceeds to spank the womans buttocks like a Bongo drum, to the beat of the music. This controversial move was first seen at the Washington DC Convention last year, performed by Julio de la Salsa, from the Dominican Republic. Teaching this move can be pretty interesting, and hilarious at the same time, especially if you dont know the person youre doing it with that well!
I was demonstrating the move with Justin. The problem was that he was afraid to spank my butt and possibly hurt me. I told him to get the proper show effect, he needed to hit a little harder, you know, like a Real Man. Well, needless to say, when I said that, he slapped my butt so hard, that I yelled, Ouch! I started laughing so much along with the small audience of curious onlookers now gathered around us. It was hilarious. They then said, Quite right, and can you imagine our Queen of England doing this move ? - NOT!. I was rolling on the floor, laughing my head off!
Theres something about Brit humor that makes my knees weak with non-stop laughter. Thank God for Justin and Giles, who literally made my entire week with their jokes and great Brit humor. Ill never forget you both! Please keep in touch. You too Sylvia and Annabell!! You're the greatest!
Luis Vazquez kept our bellies aching from laughter with his jokes and humor as well. Everywhere Luis goes, a light of laughter follows him. Hes truly one of a kind.
Many thanks to Dancefun for organizing all the weeks activities, to Bernie for a fantastic time at Chicos Paradise, and to all the instructors who gave of their time and energy to make this trip a long lasting memory. I truly believe what made the trip were the dancers themselves. Each one brought their own unique element to the picture. Each one had a story to tell, a joke to give, and a friendship to offer. I know that the life and energy on this cruise was unmatched, and one that I will never forget.
