The Hottest Salsa CD Collection......

Trying to start or add to your CD Collection?

We're in the process of compiling a list of the best CD's to buy that have the MOST Salsa music per CD...(biggest bang for your buck!)

It's so frustrating purchasing a CD at a Latin Music store and find there are only one or two songs on it that are good. It's ADDITIONALLY FRUSTRATING when you can't read or speak a word of Spanish.

For instance, at a club you'll hear a KILLER song - you run up and ask the DJ what the name of the song was, and the artist. The next day, you go to a recommended Latin Music store, search through EVERY CD in the "Salsa" section, and IT'S NOWHERE TO BE FOUND!!!

Each week, you bravely go it alone, hoping, wondering, wishing, and KICKING YOURSELF for not paying attention during Spanish class in high school.... GOD you whish you knew HOW TO SPEAK SPANISH so you could REMEMBER what the heck it was they were singing in the Lyrics - because maybe, JUST MAYBE, that might be the title......????

THEN, after SHEER FRUSTRATION, you've given up all hope. You drudgingly go up to the gal at the counter and ask her if she knows a song that goes like this....."ba, ba, boo, boo, da, da... baum, pa, Oh , yea....ba, ba, ba, ....." You then open your eyes and realize she is just sitting there, staring at you, giving you this unfriendly, "dear in headlights" blank look, looking like she's been weaned on pickles, and wondering just who the hell you are...

Here's a starter list of GREAT CD's to help you avoid the above scenario...

"Dear Edie,
Hey what's up? As I was browing the web looking for some resources of some the best salsa cds from the '70's, I came across your page. It's nice to know that there are some women out there that have a deep appreciation for this superior genre of music. Be down, girl! Well anyway, I was wondering if you could compose a list of what you think to be the top ten cds from this era. Or if you could direct me to people that have an extensive knowledge of the good stuff. From the collection I have, here are just a few that one could add to their list:

1. "Salsa" Larry Harlow 1974
2. "Ismael Quintana" don't remember the year but it has "Mi Debilidad"
on it.
3. "Pa' Fuera" Roberto Roena
4. "El Progresso" Roberto Roena
5. "El Juicio" Willie Colon canta Hector Lavoe
6. "Tiempos Buenos" Junior Gonzalez
7. "Sabor" Angel Canales
8. "Salsa Encendida" Tipica '73
9. "The Two Sides of Tipica" Tipica '73 (this one is very experimental,
but it really highlights the talent of the musicians)
10. "Campanero Rumbero" Willie Rosario

The above list is not in any order. But I guarentee, if you consider yourself a lover of this sublime music, you will find these more than satisfying. Thanks for listening. Hope to hear from you soon. El senor,
Elias Santiago

Dear Edie,
Frankie Negron's CD ( Con amor se gana http://www.proteusinfo.com/frankie/) is burnning up the east coast, its hot, the kid is good.................
Mombolay...

Dear Edie,
I started dancing salsa last summer and became completely hooked. I worked 9-5, caught a nap before dinner and danced from then 'til 2am, or later on weekends. Your salsa-holic graph is really true!

For the longest time, though, I could not buy music because I could not decipher the words. However, lately I've delved into Spanish and began buying my favorite music -- first just one CD, then another, and. . . well, now it's becoming a collection. Besides the ones on your page, here are my favorites:

Gran Combo de Puerto Rico "Thirty Years" (2 CD's)
They've been doing it for 34 now. Their music is timeless.

Rey & Frankie Ruiz "Los Ruiz Sen~ores"
These two (and Gran Combo) have the happiest salsa music I know This CD compiles many of their best.

Joe Arroyo "The Best", Vol. 2
Joe Arroyo, absolutely, plays the most exciting salsa I've heard. *Try* not moving to his music!! This CD has more than salsa, but the salsa is unbeatable.

Oscar D'Leon is my favorite overall, though you've covered him. :)

Thanks for keeping up your wonderful page, Edie.

"Dear Edie,
My name is Gustavo and I'm a salsa lover. I want to congratulate you for your Web Page on Salsa. However, there are many GREAT artists missing on you BEST CD list; such as, Eddie Santiago and Luis Enrique. Eddie's greatest hits CD is the best Salsa CD I have listened to in a while.

Thanks, Keep your great work up!!! Two Thumbs Up for you!! - Gustavo"

"Dear Edie,
I went to Ritmo Latino yesterday and as usual I just lost control and listened to 15 cds. I finally picked up two new salsa CD's. One is the new CD of Jose ALberto "El Canario" - I saw his show at the Copa-De-Oro. The other was of Ray Sepulveda, which I also saw at the same club. THE CDS ARE AMAZING!!! Every song is a hit and there is no song that falls behind the others in quality and production. Usually you buy a CD and only about half of it - if you are lucky - is a potential hit song. Here I found two CDs that are totally, completely, master hits!!! - Yohay Aharon"

"Dear Edie,
I just got another great Salsa CD from Edgar Joel & Anthony Colon "Oro Salsero". This is a "MUST" have CD for those Salsa locos... from this 20 songs at least 15 are great and the other five are good... but my favorite song is "Hechizo De Luna" In fact, I'm listening to it
now... I even carry it with me in the car... You have to check this one out...this CD is what I call "STATE OF THE ART WORK" meaning this CD is great.....If you buy this one, you won't regret it, if you like Romantic Salsa... another great group is "El Grupo Niche De Colombia" they have some good music... check them out. I will try to help you as much as I can... I don't have much time to talk about Salsa now, since I work and study full time. Congratulations again for you Web Page..."
Felicidades y mucha suerte....

"Dear Edie,
I have been trying to put together a list too. I'm sure there are some very talented salseros out there today, but they cannot compare to the likes of Hector Lavoe, Willie Colon, Johnny Pacheco, Larry Harlow, Ismael Miranda, etc. My top ten list of Must Haves would have to include:

  1. Fania All Stars, "Greatest Hits," 1977 release
  2. Willie Colon and Hector LaVoe, "Costa Nuestra," 1972 release
  3. Conjunto Classico, "Los Rodriguez," 1979 release
  4. Ismael Rivera, "Eclipse Total," 1975 release
  5. Cheo Feliciano, "The Best," 1994 release
  6. Johnny Pacheco, "De Nuevo Los Compadres--with Pete 'El Conde' Rodriguez," 1983 release
  7. Ray Barretto, "Rican/Struction," 1979 release
  8. Orchestra Harlow, "The Best of Orchestra Harlow and Ismael Miranda," 1976 release
  9. Eddie Palmieri, "The History of Eddie Palmieri," 1975 release
  10. Hector LaVoe, "Hector's Gold," 1980 release

I have a hard time finding any good salsa in the record stores around here, so I just order through a catalogue. Que Viva La Salsa de Ayer!
