From Edie, the Salsa FREAK: I put a ** next to clubs I attend regularly and LOVE.
E-mail me if you're interested in GOOD REFERENCES for lessons (which I recommend HIGHLY if you want to MAXIMIZE your fun, and not just SIT on the SIDELINES.....). There are tons of Salsa instructors, and I've taken lessons from almost all of them at one time or another. I'll give you my recommendations and an unbiased opinion on each. Keep dancing Salsa! It's good for the mind, body, and soul! Edie .;) SALSA FREAK

The Mayan -(They play more Salsa on Saturdays, than on Fridays. So go SATURDAYS) THE LARGEST SALSA CLUB IN THE NATION 1038 Hill St. Los Angeles, CA (213) 746-9928 SIDE NOTE: This club holds 2,000 people.... Imagine 2,000 Salseros in one place. When people come visit from out of town, they literally cannot believe that such a place actually exists. It gets packed on Friday and Saturday nights! The bands are phenomenal, (they sometimes have two, playing side by side....it's incredible...) The atmosphere is nothing short of a religious experience the first time you walk into the place... You feel like you've just walked into another time. It's like walking into an old '50s film in Havana...It's absolutely beautiful, big, rustic, depicting old Mayan ruins, the ceiling is 3 stories high, there are two separate dance floors, 2 HUGE mirrored rotating balls, one of them the size of a small Volkswagen, and the acoustics in the place makes the band's music bigger than life itself. The club is well lit, and you can "see" the beauty of salsa dancing - AT ITS BEST!
Techno music is played quite a bit there however - especially on Fridays. There's more "Salsa" music played there on Saturdays than Fridays. I like going on Saturdays versus Fridays. There's way too much Techno played on Fridays. The techno music attracts the "non-Salsero" crowd, and it supposedly motivates those who don't know about Salsa to be exposed to Salsa music, like Salsa music, and see the dancing, learn to dance, then get hooked on it. Kind of like a drug.... SOUND FAMILIAR ANYONE??? CAN WE RELATE OR WHAT???
...The Mayan is a MUST SEE if you are visiting or new to Los Angeles... Directions from LAX Airport: Take the 405 North, about 4-5 miles to the 10 East. Go about 4-5 miles to the 110 North. Go about 1.5 miles to the 9th street exit. Exit 9th Street. go about 4-5 blocks to Hill St. Turn right, go about 2 blocks and the Mayan is on the left. Don't run over the guys with the red flags trying to wave your cars down to park in their area. They step out right in front of you, waving those flags as if it was the last thing they were ever going to do in their lives. I'm not kidding. I thinks it's a suicide mission for them.... or they truly believe in their hearts that they can stop a half ton of steel coming at them at 30 mph...
