Finding Your Center

By Ben M.

In learning to do free spins, the key point for me, among all the details salsa instructors mention, has proven to be, "Find your center!" This involves center of gravity, and a certain balance point, around which spinning becomes possible, and eventually easy. With enough practice, it matters little whether one spins on right foot, left foot, spins right, or spins left. That balanced feeling--one's center--is either there or not. To salvage a spin that is off-center from the beginning is difficult or impossible.

In order for our personal lives to balance and spin correctly, Jesus Christ must be The Center. Jesus said, "I AM the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me."

Many people resist Christ as the Center of their lives because of a perception that God's "rules" are too difficult to follow. People naturally crave freedom. However, even some civilized people forget that freedom is possible only within the structure of rules. For example, traffic could not flow if everyone did their own thing, ignoring stoplights, speed limits, etc. People who flout laws or invent their own "as they go" are usually doing so at everyone else's expense. Ever try to partner dance with a free-spirit type who just "feels the music" and doesn't know any steps?

Through practiced repetitions, complex dance moves can become automatic and internal. With concepts and rules internalized, we in a sense become free--free to flow, free to express--which is the essence of dance. Similarly, freedom in life happens as Truth becomes internal, not merely external, as in a list of rules. Nevertheless, a child of God must continue to practice godliness as diligently as a dancer practices. As God's Spirit and His law become internalized, a Christian life will flow and express itself. Jesus said, "He whom the Son makes free shall be free indeed!" Jesus promised (His followers) to be with us, and better yet, to be IN us. When that happens, you will know your Center!

Sadly, dancers will spend more effort, money, and time in learning to do spins than in seeking to know the True Center of life. Our lives will never be a balanced spin without Jesus Christ. Find your Center!
