Several months ago, I spoke to my Mambo Society buddy in New York, Angel Rodriguez, about his future visit to L.A. I was especially concerned about having him bring his brand of mambo to L.A. for one reason: there's not much of it. I feel that L.A. could benefit from a variety of New York based instructors and dancers so that they can gain exposure to new, or multi-flavored influences from the varied styles of mambo.

One Monday night at El Floridita in Hollywood, California, this summer, I was introduced to a very fine dancer by the name of Michelle Bernhardt (who, I was told, danced on "2"). We danced several times and I had lots of fun. Michelle has a style not unlike many New York dancers and as we spoke and got to know each other, it turned out that she was originally from New York. We spoke at length, about New York and of our associations, acquaintances and friends from back home, relative to dancing, when the name Angel Rodriguez came up. I asked if he was the same Angel who is married to Addie. When she replied that not only is he the very same person but that he was finally coming to L.A. the following week, I was elated that he followed through on my suggestion to visit, and that I would finally see Angel once more! It turns out that Michelle and Angel are also old friends.

I soon received a phone call from Angel, wanting to get together in L.A. So, the following Monday, we decided to meet each other at El Floridita. I called all the folks from my little Mambo family to see if they could be at El Floridita as well. Chantal Sagouspe was on her way back to Fresno when I called and said, regretfully, that she had an important function to attend to the next day and wanted to have a decent head start. Everyone else said that they would be there.

I arrived a little late, with Adrienne Tripp, of World Dance Federation (who produced the first fairly-judged World Championship Salsa Dance Contest, at the Hollywood Palladium), following a SalsaWeb staff meeting, and immediately noticed two things: One: Chantal was on the dance floor dancing with Harry Bowens. She had decided to stay, meet and dance with Angel and the rest of us and then leave at first light to Fresno; Two: Angel was surrounded by several people, all of whom seemed to vie for his attention. I was happy to see both of them and thought of how nicely this night would go, with fun mambo dancing!

When Angel and I got together at one of the tables we hugged each other and tried to catch up on old times. Frankly, it was a little hard to speak with him because he was mobbed. It seemed that everyone knew that here was a great New York mambo dancer/instructor/performer. When we did have a chance to speak he mentioned that he was finishing a book about mambo dancing called "Free Your Soul, Its a Mambo Thing: Salsa." I was happy to hear that he was near completion of the manuscript and that I would be one of the first people to read it. We continued to speak about his other projects (instructional videos and ear training tapes) and then got a chance to dance.

At one point I showed him my old Mambo Society shine list that I always carry in my wallet. I immediately went to the dance floor with Harry, Chantal and Errol Lewis and showed him the shine routine that we performed at the Hollywood Palladium for the show segment of the Galavision SalsaWeb sponsored Salsa event this summer. Angel jumped in to do the routine as well. I felt a little guilty, though, because I didn't get into the Mambo Society shine routine with Angel to begin with and I wasn't calling out the shines for my routine. Well, he stepped back, liked what he saw and then commenced to do a very cool and intricate shine routine of his own. It was great, and we continued to dance and play, apparently delighting our audience, till we closed the place!

When the night was over, we arranged to get together for Angel to hold an exclusive workshop on his brand of partnering turns.

The next night, Angel came over to the Dance America studio in Woodland Hills, the base where I rehearse the Mambo Men and Women, and do our training, and he gave us a workshop on his unique brand of slick turn patterns. Several of us had to struggle through a few of his advanced turns, but we all had a good time and we picked up a couple of cool turns to practice in later weeks. Afterward, we all decided to go to St. Marks and just let loose. Angel got to hear Johnny Polanco y su Conjunto Amistad and appreciated my sentiment that this group is a major record label caliber band.

Angel had to leave a little early due to a prior commitment. He had an early date the next day with a little boy and the Jurassic Park attraction at Universal City! We said our good-byes and promised to keep in touch.

A couple of weeks later, he sent me his basic level mambo instructional video for preview, as I am representing him on the West Coast and the Internet. I'm pleased to say that Angel has turned out a quality video, with plenty of quantity! Mambo is represented well here and the video is full of basic level foot patterns, body movement and styling and is completed by partner techniques and turns. There's even a little "Descarga" at the end with Addie, Angel and the timbalero of the group �Next Level� playing timbales in a rotating fashion! Very Cute!

Teaching mambo has brought Angel and Addie to Italy where they have taught students and instructors alike in the ways of mambo. Rome, Napoli and Sicily have warmly received the founders of Razz M'Tazz with open arms as well as open minds. In fact, they have been asked to repeat their successful tour of mambo education in the very near future.

For the last three years, Angel has been teaching mambo to children at "Estrella Naciente"("Rising Star"), his non profit organization for underprivileged children. Of course, the focus is mambo yet he tempers his sessions with concepts that prepare his kids for society. Self-esteem, camaraderie and conflict-resolution skills are some of the more important aspects of the program. Performances and a dance company concept are other areas that deal more directly with goal specific themes. Basically, these young individuals, ranging from 8-18 years of age, are strengthened by building on interpersonal skills and team spirit. They've performed at many municipal functions including Lincoln Hospital, El Regresso Rehab Center, New York City Parks, festivals and block parties.

Members of Razz M' Tazz have recently performed on Barbara Walters' "The View", featuring Gloria Estefan (negotiations are presently under way for several more performances) and the "Dance with Me" music video with Chayanne and Vanessa L. Williams.

One thing is certain; Angel and Addie Rodriguez are frequently busy performing, producing, and maintaining a mambo way of life that affects many. With on and off-air performances, on-the road teaching as well as dozens of local NY/NJ workshops, the instructional videos, the book, and especially his community service, it is evident that Angel Rodriguez is a force for mambo whose time has come!
