Janette and I are sitting on the floor amidst piles of opened and unopened packing boxes in her new house. Coming from a very conservative Mexican heritage, this is the first time she has lived apart from her family, on her own. What does that poster represent?
Janette:
This is a collage of my dreams that was done back in 1991. My sister drew the rainbow and pot of gold. It was for a speech class. We were supposed to do a collage of ourselves; our lives. It is a picture of a rainbow with sparkles. It was an example of my fantasies and dreams of where I wanted to go with my life. But at the time, I didn’t know exactly where that was. Even back then, all I remember was that I wanted to be famous and achieve great success in life.
When we created this, I had decided to set a goal to do much better in life. A lot of my dreams are based on my family. They are the reason that I wanted to be famous. I knew deep down inside that my father always wanted to be famous. My father is a singer and he just loves to sing. My mother held back her creative urge. She was meant to do much much more than what she settled for. Unfortunately, she bought into the fact that she was a woman, and felt she could not express those talents freely. I feel that all her creative energy, her hopes, and dreams were passed over to me.
Edie:
How did you start your artistic career?
Janette:
I started with dance. You can see here on the left-hand corner of the poster are different expressions and types of dance; Flamenco, Modern, African Ballet, and Jazz. That was a very disciplined time of my life where I was able to educate myself. It was a great foundation for what I wanted to do much later in life, and what I am doing now.
In the center here, I have [a picture of] the world. Here, I have listed places where I would love to go, New York, Rio de Jenero, a cruise ship. It was always my desire to travel. I wanted to see and explore the world. I wanted to dive free, like this dagger here, representing Acapulco. I wanted to go out to the world at large. I used that energy for my travels. I wanted to be on a ship, I just wanted to see the whole world.
The words French, Spanish, and Italian are all the languages I wanted to learn. I’ve got Spanish mastered, and French, well, I understand it a lot. I just need Italian now. The word “Showtime” represents me......(she pauses for a moment…) just being a Star! At the very end of the rainbow, the shimmering pot of gold. These are all the things I believe in, all my dreams.

So where are you now on this road to success?
Janette:
(she points to a spot just inches away from the pot of gold...) I’ve now come to about “here” in my life. The words “where to go next” represent my future.
Edie:
Speaking of your “pot of gold” future, it looks like you’re inches away with your new role as Carmen in the up and coming “Shut up and Dance” movie! This movie is just about to hit the streets! How did you land such a great role and what did you do to prepare yourself for that?
Janette:
I knew indirectly. I was always a Chayanne fan, but I had drifted from that because I really had gotten into Salsa music for a while. One day last year in October (1996), I saw Chayanne on television during the Miss Mexico beauty pageant. I was actually home one night (which was surprising for a Salsa addict...) and I recorded it. During the recording, I was absolutely entranced by his performance. I had seen him evolve as an artist over time, and I could not believe how incredible he had become. He became a phenomenal dancer, and coming from a jazz background, I could see his transformation from his three-year absence. He was back and he was hot. I could see his maturity as an artist. I watched the recording over and over again from Monday to Friday, every day. On Friday, I was watching it again with my sister. Without looking up at her, I asked, “I wonder if I’ll ever meet Chayanne...”
That night was my first night teaching at the Sportsman’s Lodge. Usually Fridays are a very stressful day for me, but it was also a full moon. The moon was so clear that night; you could actually see the craters on it! My shoulder wasn’t hurting me (I had a recent car accident), and my class went great. Everything seemed to be going great for me that evening.
I was at my shoe sales booth at around 11:30pm, when I looked up and saw just the corner, the back side of his face. Within that second, I knew it was him. I completely forgot about selling shoes, and told myself “I cannot believe he’s here, I cannot believe he’s here!” The moment I looked at him, he turned around and looked at me. We just looked at each other for what seemed an eternity, and I had to look away because I just couldn’t sustain it!
I was dancing with this a gentleman by the name of Andy. He knew that Chayanne was in the room, and the camera was rolling. He managed to lead me over toward the camera, and said “I want to get you in front of the camera.” Immediately, I said, “No”. And he yelled, “Yes!” He was adamant about getting me in front of that camera! He told me again, very firmly, “Yes, because you’re going to be a star!” That just set the whole stage for the whole night. I later thanked him for it.
My attention went back to selling shoes. I thought, OK, I caught his attention, now how am I going to talk to him? Immediately, I grabbed this guy and told him to dance with me. We danced two songs near the spot where Chayanne was sitting. He noticed us right away. We had caught his attention. I treated that dance like it was the performance of my life. Afterward, I went to my booth, - totally forgetting that I was supposed to be working that night. I figured I’d better go up to him and tell him how great I thought he was, you know, “Chayanne, I think you’re wonderful, you’re an incredible dancer, here’s my card, if he ever need a dancer.....”, you know, completely sell myself to him like I’m sure everyone else does. When I was on my way towards him, someone had stopped him to sign an autograph. When I walked almost in front of him, while he was signing the autograph, he looked up at me and said, “You know, I want to tell you that you dance really, really well. I was watching you.”. I thanked him and started to say, “Well, if you ever need a dancer.....” he cut me off and said, “No, you don’t seem to understand what I’m telling you. You are REALLY, really good.”. I was speechless. I was choking up. I was like “wow”. I could not believe someone of this magnitude was actually complimenting me. It was like magic...
Edie:
So what happened next?
Janette:
I thanked him, and walked back to my booth. That was it. My instinct told me, NOT to give him by business card or name. I just knew at that moment that I would see him again, and I knew that I was going to be working with him, I just didn’t know when. That was the day I decided I was going to be a star. I had toyed with the idea before, but that was the day I made the decision.
The next Monday, I started taking voice lessons. I had always wanted to sing, and friends had told me that I had a deep enough voice to be a good singer. I take voice lessons almost every day, and am about to release my first hit.
Chayanne came back into town, and they were having open-call auditions for Salsa dancers. Unfortunately, just three days prior to the audition, my dance partner and I broke up.
Edie:
How did that make you feel?
Janette:
I was devastated. If we would have held out a few days longer, I thought we would have had a chance. So I called a friend of mine Klara, and I told her what happened. She told me “Forget about it, just forget about it. In your mind, when you go to that audition, you’re going to end up with someone better.” And that’s exactly what I did. I didn’t know who, but that’s what I put in my mind.
Janette:
I was told later on that Chayanne, the director, and writer of the movie would be at the Sportsman’s Lodge the next Friday, April 11th. I didn’t think I was going to make it because it was my brother’s birthday, but after the party, I decided to go. I arrived at 12:00. Chayanne also arrived at 12:00. I was told to not be aggressive with any of the movie stars, writers, or producers. So that’s what I did. I just did what I was told. Albert gave me the right advice. I trusted my instincts about it, and I went with it.
The whole time, I never asked Chayanne to dance. I was just there doing my own thing, dancing. I went to sit down and Daryl, the writer saw me. He had been watching me dance all night long. He motioned me to come over to him. He then asked me what I was doing on Monday. I told him I got off at 3:30pm. He asked if I could stop by the studio for an audition for a role in the movie. I told him yes, definitely. Before you leave, I want to give you my number. I said fine. I got up and went to dance with my friend William. While we were dancing, I noticed Daryl was watching us very closely. I realized I was being auditioned right then. I started performing, but not nervously, or over-doing it, just being myself.
Edie:
Did William show you off, and did he know what was going on?
Janette:
Yes, I believe he did. After we got done dancing, these girls came up to me asking for their shoes. I went to take care of them when William came up to me and said, “Janette, they want you over there NOW. You’d better go over there right now!”
So I apologized to the girls, dropped everything, and headed towards Daryl’s table. Daryl introduced me to the Director of the movie, Randa (known for “Children of a Lesser God”). So then, Daryl said, “You have a really great look. I want you to come in on Monday. This role involves a steamy make-out scene with Chayanne, and a really hot dance number. The role is the other woman of Chayanne’s.” While he was saying this, I was very very calm, and very professional. I just listened, that was it. Inside, of course I was dying! He then started giving me hints on what to do and what not to do at the audition. Apparently they had already auditioned 40 girls for the part and they were at their wits end!
From the moment he hand-picked me from the crowded dance floor, I knew this role would be mine. The role had been given to me on a Golden plate, and all I had to do was just come in and take it! All he needed to know was if I could act and read lines. After he explained everything involved, I just looked up at him and said, “I can do it.”. He then grabbed my hand, and lead me right to Chayanne. Chayanne was about to dance with another woman when Daryl cut him off. He whispered something in Chayanne’s ear. What I heard was, “This is Janette. She’s a great dancer. I want you to dance with her.”. He took my hand and we just started dancing.

How is he as a Salsa dancer?
Janette:
He’s a phenomenal dancer, he’s just learning Salsa, and for the few weeks he’s been learning, he is doing incredible.
Edie:
How was your first dance with him?
Janette:
I was just myself. I was not nervous one bit. He did not intimidate me what-so-ever. I was just having fun! During the song, there was a break in the music. It was right after a cross-body-lead. During the break, I gently caressed his face. I did it because…. (a long pause) …. I just felt like doing it! He just totally opened up after that. He was just excited and we just completely connected in an instant on that dance floor. Both he and I completely opened up as dancers, and we had the time of our lives out there. The whole time he kept saying “Que sabroso” (this is so cool!).
When we finished dancing, Daryl asked me to dance. Daryl felt so excited because I knew in his heart he finally found “her”. I knew his heart was saying “This is her! This is Maria Carmen!” Nobody directly said that out loud, but judging from their body languages, I could see and feel their excitement. “This is her!”
Edie:
Hadn’t they seen you before when you auditioned with Harry?
Janette:
They had seen me before, but they were so busy casting, budgeting, and preoccupied with other things that by this time, I’m sure they had forgotten that I even auditioned! This night, however, they had already casted everyone, except for the role of Maria Carmen. Maria Carmen was on their minds that night. They just needed her. It was a perfect moment.

What was wrong with all the other women they auditioned?`
Was it 40?
Janette:
Yes, they told me 40. The problem was they needed a very specific woman. She had to be able to act, look Latina, speak both fluent Spanish and English, be in her mid twenties, and be an incredible Salsa dancer. They had a real hard time finding this person. As a last resort, they realized they would have to go to a club to find her. And there I was.
I auditioned on Monday, April 14th at 4:00pm. I said to myself, “This is my destiny. I’m ready”. I nailed it, and I knew I had it.
