| Blading by day, Dancing by Night... Edie, The Salsa FREAK Interviews World Famous Randy Newman "Story of a Roller Blading Maverick Turned Salsero..." ... Full Story and Interview to come March 8th... |
| Venice Beach, California... |
Randy and I practically have the same shoe size, so he let me borrow his skates for the day. I strapped them on like ski boots, and stood up on my feet, wobbling around, arms flying in the air, trying to keep my balance. Randy looked at me, smiled to himself and said, "OK Edie, lean forward, put your hands out, and whatever you do, don't lean ba..... "
CRASH!!
Right on my butt.
"...don't lean back Edie."
Oh brother. I felt like I was learning to walk all over again. I picked myself back up, and "floated" to the gate. I then attempted to make it to the street. I looked down, on the sidewalk, and suddenly realized there was a CURB next to the street. A normal, standard sized curb, right next to my car. Now why hadn't I noticed this VERY STEEP AND VERY INCREDIBLY LARGE curb before? "Uh, Randy... uh, how do I stop.....???????"
"Oh... I forgot to tell you.... those skates don't have brakes. I took them off."
"YOU WHA.... "
CRASH!!
Right on my butt, AGAIN.
"HOW DO YOU STOP THEN????" As I picked myself (and my ego) up, brushing off the pavement, which was now a very permanent part of my ass.
Randy suddenly appeared over me, helping me up. He then started teaching me how to skate. Well, upon my INSISTENCE, he first showed me how to STOP with no breaks, AND THEN how to skate.
Stopping was an issue for me. A VERY BIG ISSUE.
We practiced on the street a bit, and then skated off to Venice Beach, only a few blocks away.
Seeing Randy Newman on skates is like watching a dare devil 'do or die' movie. He's a symphony in motion. I'm here to tell you, that man can move. I felt like a complete klutz around him. Skating is easier than walking for Randy. He makes it look so easy! He's a natural athlete with the ability to pick up just about anything he sets his mind to... skating up steep ramps, jumping and skating down stairways, stairwell hand rails, over trash cans, over cars, flying in the air for a movie shot, bungy jumping, parachuting.... all done with total ease and complete control.
... it didn't used to be that way when he took his first Salsa Class...
Being an expert at one sport or activity, then going on to another like partner dancing, can be a very humbling experience for most of us. It's like, you want to get good, real fast...!
... Now, a year later, Randy Newman, "Maverick Skater turned Salsero", has become surprisingly good at dancing Salsa. I even got my "fix" with him on the dance floor the other night! I'm proud to say, that he is now preparing for his first Salsa Competition at the Sportsman's Lodge in Van Nuys, California....
Ladies and Gentlemen, introducing, Mr. Randy Newman, Salsero / Roller Blader Maverick, Stuntman
Randy, How long have you been dancing Salsa?
Just about 1 year.
How long have you been rollerblading?
Ive been skating on Inline Skates for almost 14 years. Though, I started Ice Skating when I was almost 3 years old. I grew up in Culver City, Ca., a small beach suburb in Los Angeles. Right around the corner from where I lived was an Ice Rink. The Ice Rink was my home-away-from-home. I was that little, punk kid that was weaving in and out of everyone, spraying ice and generally pissing everyone off!
How would you compare dancing Salsa to Rollerblading?
In the beginning, Salsa Dancing and Inline Skating, both seem to have an awkward feeling to it. But, if practiced persistently, both can become very fluent feeling, allowing the Dancer/Skater to become totally immersed in fun and pleasure while doing either activity.
What's the most daring and/or difficult rollerblading stunt you've ever done?
Thats a hard one to answer because Ive been asked to do some interesting things on skates on many occasions. Heres a few I was clocked at 65 mph skating down a two-mile long hill in a very Exclusive neighborhood of Bel Air, at night. I jumped ramp-to-ramp over a "Monster Truck" full of Bikini wearing beauties during a Bikini Contest, sponsored by Hawaiian Tropics. I have also slid under a slow moving 16-Wheeler Truck and Trailer for a movie.
Why do you like living dangerously?
Actually, I actually insist upon living dangerously. I think everyone should step over the line every so often. It really gets my blood flowing to think Im cheating death or injury. For instance, take skydiving. Its hard to explain to someone that has never been skydiving before, the incredible feeling you get when you are falling through the air at 200 mph, only to open your parachute and float down slowly and softly. Its so fast and crazy, then serene and peaceful and quiet. Every time I walk away from a dangerous activity, whatever it may be, I feel a shot of life pumped into my body that makes me feel as if I could live forever. "Im on top of the World!"
What other Extreme activities do you participate in?
I absolutely love Snowboarding. I also ride a motorcycle. I enjoy Mountain Biking, Rock Climbing, Skydiving and Bungee Jumping! When it comes to the Extremes, I will try anything once!
What motivated you to learn how to RollerBlade?
Having grown up Ice-Skating, I always had the dream and ambition of skating on an Ice Half-Pipe. But that dream was completely impossible. A close friend of mine started working for this new Company called RollerBlade, and insisted that I come out and try these skates. This was in early 1986. I went to a free trial event that RollerBlade sponsored on Tuesday nights on the beach in Santa Monica, Ca. I was amazed at the similarity between Ice-Skating and Inline Skating. Within minutes, I found out that I could do all of the things I could do on Ice Skates, and more, without any problems, and I WAS AT THE BEACH! I was no longer restricted to a cold and dark Ice Rink. Furthermore, I could now ride on the same Ramps that the Skateboarders skated on. MY DREAM AND AMBITION HAD BECOME REALITY. Needless to say, I went out and bought my first pair of RollerBlade Inline Skates the very next day! One month later, I started working for RollerBlade as a Technical Representative Six months later, I was selected as a member of RollerBlades very first National Stunt Team, Team Extreme.
Why did you start rollerblading at a comparatively older age than most people of your caliber did?
When I began Inline Skating in 1986, there were very few people that even knew what Inline Skates were. I was 18 years old, just out of High School, and Inline Skating didnt have the same popularity, exposure and attention that society and the media give it now. The kids of today are exposed to skating at a much earlier age in life. If I could have started Inline Skating at an early age, I would have.
In the RollerBlade world, who is your biggest idol?
My biggest idol are the kids. The kids have taken the extreme side of Inline Skating to a totally different level than when I started skating. They are the ones that will change the face of skating in the future. Skating also gives the kids a chance too not only stay active and off the streets, but to excel and constantly challenge themselves.
Have you been in any film/television or news shows?
Yes. You can find me in the latest Faith Evans music video, dance-skating. Ive been in a few movies such as "Prayer of the RollerBoys", "Airborne", "Mighty Ducks" and "Mighty Ducks 2". I was a background extra in other Movies, such as "Side Out" and "White Men Cant Jump", and Television Shows like "Beverly Hills 90210", "Party of Five", "Baywatch", "Pacific Blue", "Saved by the Bell", and others. I was also in an "American-Gladiator-type" of show called "Blade Warriors".
How about commercials or ads for different companies?
Ive appeared in commercials for Coca Cola, Mountain Dew, Kodak, Sunkist and Coors Beer, to name a few. Ive been in numerous print ads and videos for different skate companies, such as RollerBlade, Roces, and Ultra Wheels. My biggest print ad was for B.U.M. Equipment. The B.U.M. Equipment ad showed up on Bus Shelters, Billboards, and Subway walls all over the Country. I have also shown up in different Magazines from all over the world. Since I do most of my skating on the Venice Beach Boardwalk, I have many pictures taken of me every time I skate. Unfortunately, its usually by people I dont even know.
Who is your current sponsor?
RollerBall, Inc. RollerBall Inline Skates are a new Inline Skate manufacturer with a slightly different concept of wheel design in which the wheels are round like tennis balls. Having the round wheels allows the skater to have more balance and stability, as well as more wheel contact with the ground at any given point, especially when turning. For the type of skating I do, Ill take as much contact as I can get. That is, when I am actually in contact with the ground.
Has rollerblading stardom taken you outside of the United States?
It sure has. Ive been to Australia and New Zealand, Europe twice, as well as all over the United States.
What was your favorite country, and why was it your favorite?
I really enjoyed Germany. The people there were very friendly to my friends and me. When I was there, during the summer of 1996, I remember the landscape being very colorful and full of so much character and history. I got the chance to ride my friends BMW 1100 motorcycle down the Autobahn at 270 kilometers an hour (about 150mph or so) with four other German friends, playing cat-and-mouse, on our way to and from Northern Italy from Munich, Germany, just so we could have real Italian food for lunch. What an experience!
Are there things like competitions or performances in the rollerblading world?
There are many competitions and shows for all different facets of the skate industry. For the extreme and aggressive skaters, there is the "X Games" sponsored by ESPN, and the "MTV Sports and Music Festival". Both of which include Inline Skating, Skateboarding, BMX and other Extreme-type sports. There is also the National Inline Skate Series (NISS), a multi-city tour for amateur aggressive skaters, and the Aggressive Skate Association (ASA), which caters to the professional worldwide ranks. Recently, Red Bull Energy Drink sponsored the very first Dance Skate competition in Venice Beach, Ca. The event included dance skaters from all over the United States, highlighted the many different styles of dance skating that exist throughout the Country. It was a big success, and yes, I was a member of a four-person team that performed to the song, "CopaCabana", performed by Barry Manilow. We blew everyone away, costumes and all. We took First Place in the Team Division. Roller Hockey is very quickly becoming a popular spectator sport. You can also find 5k, 10k and longer distance road races everywhere in the world.
Why did you dye your hair blonde? When did you do it?
About a year ago, I was looking for something different. Its also a well-known fact that Blondes have more fun. Plus, how many bleached, blonde hair white guys do you see Salsa Dancing? I like standing out in the middle of a crowd. Dare to be different, I always say.
Do you perform stuntwork or movie doubles? If so, whom did you double for?
I have appeared in a few different movies, usually as a stunt double, for skating scenes. Unfortunately, I havent doubled for anyone worth talking about.
Why did you start Salsa dancing?
At first, Salsa Dancing looked like a lot of fun. I went to an outdoor Salsa Festival called SalsaFest, held in Los Angeles, to see a band called Ozomatli. While there I became amazed and intrigued at the flow and sensuality that came with dancing fluently. I watched Sir Harry Bowens ( who is now my Instructor) very casually win the Competition that day. That inspired me to want to get better. That, and the fact that most Salsa Clubs and Salsa events have three times, or more, the number of woman than men.
When did you start learning Salsa?
I started learning right from the beginning, which was almost a year ago. Didnt you already ask this question? My first Group and Private Instructor was William Ochoa. He has a great way of breaking down the different Salsa steps, whether it is while teaching the Basic or a semi-complicated combination move. He furnished me with a great foundation of structure and timing. I recommend William and his style of teaching to everyone that is learning.
Who or what has been your biggest inspiration in getting better at learning Salsa?
I love a challenge! When I first started Salsa Dancing, I compiled a list of some of the most incredible female dancers, who thoroughly intimidated me, and I taped it to my wall. This list included people like Laura Canellias, Edie Lewis, the Salsa Freak, Janette Valenzuela, Joby Vasquez, Josie and a many other local dancers. I knew that if I could dance with these women, I could dance with anyone! Slowly but surely, I began crossing names off the list.
Did you hang up your skates for Salsa? Do you have the time for both?
Not a chance. I am a very avid skater, skating both during the week, after work, and on the weekends. There is always time for both!
Would you ever combine Salsa dancing with Rollerblading some day? How?
Already doing it. The problem is finding someone that knows how to skate AND Salsa Dance, and is able to do both fairly well. Its pretty cool to realize that I can do both of my loves at the same time.
In the Salsa dance world, who do you truly respect as an accomplished dancer.
There are so many. First and foremost, Edie the Salsa Freak.<<smiling>> Albert Torres for his styling, Sir Harry Bowens for the words "Less is More", Francisco and Luis Vasquez and Alex DiSilva for their incredible footwork, spins and overall dancing abilities. Also, Laura Canelles, Joby Vasquez and Josie.
Because youre an expert in one sport (blading), and then became a beginner in another (Salsa dancing), what was the transitional learning curve like? How long did it take to get over that?
I knew it would take some time to learn how to Salsa Dance well. At first, learning the steps, combinations AND the lead seemed like a lot. As I continued to be persistent and practice, I began to link my combinations and my lead was becoming more pronounced. Within four months of starting, I was dancing about 4 times a week. I threw myself completely into my dancing. This is how I learned so fast. But it took many times dancing with my friend Adrianne Lerma at the BoatHouse, over and over again to start reaching a comfortable point. Thanks Adrianne! Now, Im dance upwards of six nights a week. This includes Salsa Club dancing, Privates and Casino Rueda.
How long did it take you to finally feel very comfortable asking very good female dancers to dance.
I started asking some of the women whose names I had put on my list at about the nine-month mark. I didnt feel comfortable dancing with them until that point. I didnt want to be thought of as a boring dancer. I wanted to peak the interest of my partner, and at the same time, make her look good.
Were you terrified to ask women to dance at one point? Describe what it felt like in the beginning.
Every time I would begin a dance for the first time with one of the women from my list, I would have to stop and take a deep breath before beginning. I was so nervous. But, like everything else I do, I told myself to get over it and just do it. Whats the worst thing that can happen, they say "No." Oh well!
Whats your advice for men getting into Salsa dancing?
Be persistent and practice. Dont be afraid to ask questions. If you see someone doing a move or a step that you liked, go over, introduce yourself, and ask if they would mind explaining how they do the particular move you want to learn. Nine times out of ten, they will be happy to explain and/or show you. Dont get intimidated! Get Inspired! Think of it as a challenge. Dont get frustrated. Remember that Rome wasnt built in a day.
What are your plans for the future, dancing, roller blading, and personally?
I am currently practicing very diligently with my partner for our first Salsa Dance competition, to be held at the Sportsmans Lodge early in March. Well be competing as Amateurs and looking forward to doing well. My skating will continue to be a major part of my life, for fun, exercise, attention and personal gratification. Maybe I will meet that special someone that will allow me to spoil her and vice-versa, as well as share in past and future experiences. As for everything else, I will continue to test the boundaries of the unknown in search of thrills, chills and hopefully no spills.
Whats your all-time favorite quote?
Go fast and take chances, with no regrets!
Thanks Randy. Youre the GREATEST!!!!
Edie, The Salsa FREAK
